Agentic AI

What agentic AI actually means for Malaysian SMEs

AMZ Labs · · 5 min read

Most SMEs met AI through a chat window. You type a question, you get an answer, you copy it somewhere useful. That is helpful, but it leaves the actual work to you. Agentic AI is different. An agent is given a goal and a set of tools, and it works through the steps itself: reading a document, looking something up, filling a spreadsheet, drafting a reply, then checking its own output.

At AMZ Labs we build these systems for Malaysian SMEs, starting with accounting firms and sales & marketing teams. This article explains what that looks like in practice, without the hype.

An agent is a worker with tools, not a chatbot

A useful agent has three things: clear instructions about its job, access to the tools that job needs (a calendar, a CRM, a folder of bank statements), and rules about what it may and may not do on its own. Take away the tools and you have a chatbot. Take away the rules and you have a liability.

Why teams of agents beat one big agent

Real work is split across roles, and agent systems work best when they copy that structure. In the systems we build, each department gets a lead agent that plans the work and hands tasks to specialist agents. A tax lead might pass the capital allowance schedule to one specialist and the add-back review to another, then assemble the result.

Smaller, focused agents are easier to test, cheaper to run and easier to fix when something goes wrong. It also lets us match the model to the task. We use Claude Sonnet for research and reasoning-heavy work, and Claude Haiku for fast, high-volume jobs like conversation, data extraction and replies.

Where agents fit in an SME today

The best starting points are repetitive, rules-based tasks that already have a clear owner and a clear definition of done:

  • Turning bank statements, including scanned paper ones, into structured transactions
  • Answering first-contact leads on WhatsApp and booking consultations
  • Researching and drafting on-brand social media content
  • Tracking filing deadlines and chasing clients for missing documents
  • Pulling performance numbers into a weekly report someone actually reads

What stays with people

Judgement, relationships and sign-off. In every system we deploy, a named person approves each output before it is posted, filed or sent to a client. Agents do the preparation; your team decides. That is what makes agentic AI safe enough to use on real client work.

If you run an SME and want to know where agents could take load off your team, talk to us. We start with one workflow, prove it, then expand.
