How AI agents can support an accounting firm, department by department

AMZ Labs · · 6 min read

Accounting firms run on structured, repeatable work with hard deadlines. That makes them one of the best fits for agentic AI. Our first deployment is with a chartered accounting firm in Kuala Lumpur, where we are building an internal business intelligence system: a team of agents for each department, working on the firm's own client files.

Here is how the work splits up.

Accounts

Agents read bank statements, including scanned paper ones, and turn them into structured transactions. Before anything moves on, they check that the opening balance plus movements equals the closing balance. If the numbers don't tie, the statement goes back for review instead of quietly polluting the ledger.

Each transaction is then categorised into the general ledger using the client's prior-year patterns. Anything the agents cannot classify becomes a drafted query to the client, ready for staff to send. The same department prepares salary schedules and invoices.

Audit

Audit agents study the client's documents and check the general ledger against the trial balance, profit and loss and balance sheet, flagging any differences. They maintain the audit checklist with a version history, so anyone on the team can see what was last done and what is still outstanding.

Tax

Starting from the signed audit report, tax agents produce a first-draft tax computation. They suggest add-backs based on the client's previous years and cross-check each expense category against the ledger. The capital allowance schedule is built by matching the fixed asset listing to last year's schedule and picking up new assets by acquisition date.

Two specialists sit alongside: a what-if agent that models the effect of an adjustment before it goes back to accounts and audit, and a planning agent that builds five-year projections from three to five years of history.

Company secretarial

Agents generate statutory document packs, such as a change of director, from the company record. They track filing deadlines and send clients reminders for outstanding documents, which is exactly the kind of work that slips when the team is busy with year-end.

The firm overview

A coordinating agent collects status from each department lead and gives partners one view: what is waiting for approval, what is overdue and which deadlines are coming. Instead of chasing updates across email and WhatsApp, partners see the whole firm at once.

Accuracy and approval come first

Numbers have to be right, so the system is built around checks: balances that must tie, ledgers that must reconcile, and a named person who approves every output before it is filed or sent. Client financial data is sensitive, and any system that touches it has to be designed with Malaysia's Personal Data Protection Act 2010 in mind from day one.
